How to Become a Content Creator: Where to Start From Scratch

Sep 28, 2026

So you want to become a content creator. Maybe you have a brand-new account, five posts, five followers, and a big dream. Or maybe you've been posting for a while but still aren't sure how to turn your account into a business.

Either way, the question is the same: Where do you start?

The answer isn't brand deals or thousands of followers. It starts with building your account with a clear purpose.

How Do You Become a Content Creator From Scratch?

Start by identifying your niche and the audience you want to attract. Then create consistent content that helps the algorithm understand what your account is about.

From there, you can build toward affiliate marketing, UGC, and eventually paid brand deals.

The key is to start as you wish to proceed.

Find Your Niche

Niche down.

When you're starting out, you may want to post about everything you love. But the algorithm is looking for patterns. If one post is about gadgets, the next is an outfit, and the next is perfume, it has a harder time figuring out who should see your content.

Instead, give it something clear to work with.

For example, rather than being a creator who posts about anything you like, you could become the creator who shares gadgets under $100. Now your content has a clear theme and audience.

How Do You Figure Out Your Niche?

Start with a list of things you genuinely love. Then think about which ones have the strongest potential to make money.

Your niche can also be based on who you are and who you want to talk to.

Maybe you're a 39-year-old mom who loves boho fashion and wants to connect with other millennial moms. That's much more specific than simply calling yourself a fashion creator.

The more specific you are in the beginning, the easier it is for the right person to think, "That's me."

You can always expand later.

Build the Account You Want to Have

If your goal is to become a 10,000 or 20,000 follower creator, build your account as though you've already reached that level.

Study creators who are doing what you want to do. Pay attention to their content, positioning, and audience, then create your own version.

For the first few months, be clear over clever. Your audience should quickly understand what they'll get from following you.

Your feed isn't just a place to share whatever you happen to like that day. You're building an account that can eventually attract buyers, brands, and opportunities.

Once your audience is established, your Stories can become more personal and behind the scenes. But your main feed should continue to reinforce your niche.

Start Monetizing With Affiliate Marketing

Once you have a clear foundation, affiliate marketing is one of the simplest ways to start making money from your content.

Amazon can be a good starting point for new creators. From there, you can explore platforms such as LTK, ShopMy, or TikTok Shop depending on your audience, content, and current platform requirements.

You don't need to be everywhere. Choose the platform that makes the most sense for what you want to promote and build from there.

Don't Just Niche Down. Niche Down Your Brands.

Once you start using an affiliate platform, take your focus one step further.

Instead of promoting hundreds of random brands, choose a few that make sense for your niche and audience.

Consistently creating content around those brands can help you become more visible to them. That attention can lead to gifting, UGC opportunities, and eventually paid partnerships.

Use Your Content to Build a UGC Portfolio

UGC, or user-generated content, is another way creators can make money.

Unlike organic content on your own feed, UGC is content created for a brand to use. Your follower count may matter less because the brand is paying for the content itself.

UGC also has its own style. It's often shorter, more direct, and built around a strong hook, product, story, or reveal.

You can practice that style on your own account, giving you examples to show brands when you're ready to pursue UGC opportunities.

Brand Deals Come Later

Brand deals generally come after you've established a clear niche, built an audience, and shown brands what you can do.

Start by identifying brands that fit your content. Follow them, interact with their content, tag them when it makes sense, and study how they work with other creators.

The goal isn't to chase every brand. It's to make it obvious why you are a good fit for the brands you want to work with.

You Don't Have to Be Everywhere

When you're starting from zero, it's easy to think you need to be on every platform, promote every product, and work with every brand.

You don't.

Start with:

  • A clear niche

  • A specific audience

  • Consistent content

  • An affiliate platform that fits your goals

  • A few relevant brands

Then expand as your audience and business grow.

You don't need to have it all figured out. You need to get the ball rolling.
